King William
toptable Dining Awards 2010 - Runner-up: Hidden Gems. When the King William restaurant in Bath was converted from the knackered pub it used to be, it became it gastronomic hotspot for Bath-ites who adore the excellent food and relaxed setting. The ground floor is a pub, with the fine dining room upstairs, all now eclectically kitted out with in shades of mauve with antiques, chandeliers and daily blackboard specials. Seasonal, free-range, organic and local sum up the provenance perfectly, for dishes like fried squid with fennel, ruby chard and green sauce and main of fantastic braised lamb for two with herb broth, mash and local greens. Superb small-producer beers and ales and a blistering wine list crown King William a top restaurant in Bath.

Lime Restaurant at Homewood Park
toptable Dining Awards 2010 - Runner-up: Over £45. When you're weary of the rat race and yearn for quiet, beauty, and a great meal, then Lime Restaurant at Homewood Park, is the place for you. Just outside of Bath, overlooking ten acres of idyllic gardens, Lime's recent refurb combines classic surroundings with modern design. Original features dominate but the twee country manor look is out in favour of clean, cool lines. Head Chef Daniel Moon creates with flair and creativity, offering a range of menus from the light and healthy to the utterly indulgent, each matched with a carefully selected wine. It really is no wonder that this little piece of country heaven has been picking up awards from all corners.

Mezzaluna Ristorante
If you’re a theatre buff you’ll love Mezzaluna. It’s bang next to the Theatre Royal in Bath. Take in a show, and take in a meal too. They do a prompt pre- or post-theatre menu for under £14 for two courses. Or you could save the show for another evening, and take your time at this stylish Italian restaurant. The curtain rises on the antipasti – featuring pan-fried chicken liver with shallots, chianti and chilli. For act two, the protagonists include garganelli alla scapece with courgettes, rugola and garlic; salmone alla ligure with pecorino, herbs and pesto; and rack of lamb with the chef’s own blueberry sauce. And how about profiteroles for a dramatic climax? You’ll leave wanting more. Just don’t get carried away with Italian passion and shout ‘encore’. Save that for the theatre.

The Bath Priory Restaurant
The Priory Restaurant on the edge of historic Bath is an award-winning restaurant under the care of Executive Head Chef Michael Caines MBE, himself the owner of a pair of Michelin stars. The Bathwick Boatman
The Bathwick Boatman is a tranquil slice of gastronomic heaven, located just 10 minutes stroll from Bath's city centre on the picture-perfect banks of the River Avon. Run by husband and wife restaurateur team Ben and Rosy Hall, the restaurant is set in an old rowing club with beautiful river views and a cosy, rustic ambience. After training in Italy and Spain, Ben worked in Miami before returning home to Britain, and his simple, seasonal menu is full of robust flavours and represents good old-fashioned value for money. The Bathwick Boatman has a divine summer terrace, and is perched just above Bath's historic boating station, where you can hire a punt or a rowing boat for a post-meal paddle.

The Cavendish Restaurant & Bar
Tucked away inside the stunning Grade I listed Dukes Hotel, The Cavendish Restaurant is a discreet and elegant addition to Bath's fine dining scene. The Palladian style Georgian town house has been restored to its original splendour, and the understated dining room has a sophisticated ambience and style all of its own. Head Chef Fran Snell heads up an award-winning kitchen serving modern British cuisine, and signature dishes at The Cavendish include the Cotswald rabbit served with carrot purée, sauté langoustines and tarragon and ginger foam; the maize fed guinea fowl served with forest mushrooms; and the delectable dark chocolate pudding with blood orange sorbet and cocoa-nibbed tuille.

The Chequers
A landmark dining destination in the historic town of Bath, The Chequers is a beautifully restored gastropub and fine dining restaurant on Rivers Street that has been serving loyal customers since 1776. The Dower House @ Royal Crescent
The Dower House restaurant at The Royal Crescent Hotel in Bath – if there is an English hotel and restaurant that has a more perfect setting, we don’t know of it. The frontage of the Royal Crescent is a masterpiece of Georgian architecture and the gardens, where The Dower House restaurant is set are leafy, secluded and lovely. The Dower House now features an elegant dining room and a super cool bar as well as a sunny terrace and manicured lawns for romantic al fresco dining. The modern British menu, is inflected with Asian and Mediterranean influences. Our pick? Roast loin of fallow deer, red onion tart tatin with parsley root fondant.

The Garricks Head
The Garricks Head Pub and restaurant in Bath is set to be another long-running hit from the Digneys, the couple who brought you the King William. With the Theatre Royal, The Garricks Head is set in dandy Beau Nash’s former home and it’s a superb spot for watching both luvvies and civilians. It’s also great for dining, with a true blue British gastropub menu that uses fresh, organic, extremely local ingredients in classic dishes like slow-roast mutton. The hearty, unpretentious dishes change frequently, but on no account should you miss out the chips cooked in goose fat. The Garricks Head has great microbrew ales and beers on tap, along with Burrow Hill Somerset Cider.

The Hole In The Wall
Recently refurbished and under enthusiastic new ownership, The Hole in the Wall has a much lighter feel and continues to be one of Bath’s most popular restaurants. The award-winning eatery is a big hit with local foodies and received a rave review from the Guardian. The kitchen is under the guidance of Mike Mills, who previously worked under Rick Stein among others, and the menu is focused on local west-country produce. Everything is made on site, including the bread and ice-creams, and there are affordable set lunch and pre-theatre menus running alongside the a la carte. The extensive wine list comes courtesy of Guy Adams, Managing Director of Heritage Wine and co-owner of the restaurant, allowing The Hole in the Wall to offer reasonably-priced options from around the globe.
