Aió Restaurant
Roughly translated from Sardinian, Aió means ‘come and join us’, it’s an appropriate title for one of Bath’s most welcoming restaurants. Currently the only restaurant in the South West specialising in Sardinian cuisine, Aió, on George Street – close to the Assembly Rooms and The Circus – is a unique dining proposition, providing Bath’s gastronomes with an opportunity to step outside of the Italian comfort zone. A modern interior inspired by the warm tones and natural materials of a traditional trattoria leads through to a suntrap courtyard just made for enjoying Aió’s summery cuisine. Head chef Roberto Lilliu puts years of experience working in Mediterranean kitchens to use here, with the menu full of the warm flavours of Southern Europe.

Aqua Restaurant and Bar
Housed in a spectacular former church house, the Aqua Restaurant and Bar is considered one of Bath’s finest Arts and Crafts buildings. The main dining area, gallery and alfresco courtyard provide a theatrical backdrop for the modern European cuisine. Chef Carlo Abbasciano, originally from Puglia, cites a range of Mediterranean influences on his mostly Southern Italian cuisine. In–the-know foodies have long been flocking to Aqua restaurant and bar to enjoy locally sourced produce, Italian coffee, continental beers, Prosecco and Bellini cocktails. Come for a quick, energy-boosting espresso rapido, or settle in for a three-course meal. Traditional snacks such as Parma ham and provolone cheese with artichoke and sunblushed tomatoes are a delicious accompaniment to a full-bodied Italian red.

Mezzaluna Ristorante
If you’re a theatre buff you’ll love Mezzaluna. It’s bang next to the Theatre Royal in Bath. Take in a show, and take in a meal too. They do a prompt pre- or post-theatre menu for under £14 for two courses. Or you could save the show for another evening, and take your time at this stylish Italian restaurant. The curtain rises on the antipasti – featuring pan-fried chicken liver with shallots, chianti and chilli. For act two, the protagonists include garganelli alla scapece with courgettes, rugola and garlic; salmone alla ligure with pecorino, herbs and pesto; and rack of lamb with the chef’s own blueberry sauce. And how about profiteroles for a dramatic climax? You’ll leave wanting more. Just don’t get carried away with Italian passion and shout ‘encore’. Save that for the theatre.
